My Top Choice For Feeding Baby - Sun Harvest

11/24/2020

When my first child, who is now four, was born - I had lofty visions of making all of my own baby food from scratch. Hand picking organic fruit from my garden that I would cook and puree and store myself, you know, along with all of the sleep I would be getting and time for pruning a garden.

Ah, first time mom Mandi was so cute.

Fast forward four years and another baby later, and I know a few things about motherhood. I also know you don't have to sacrifice quality when it's done for you if you know where to look.

Picture

Lucky for us busy moms, Smart & Final has launched their own Sun Harvest baby food brand this month that is organic, clean, GMO-free and made simply from fruits and vegetables. That's it!

Available in an array of delicious flavors and only $0.99 per ounce serving, the packaging is also BPA-free, which you know is a huge must for us and most mamas.

You can choose from Mixed Vegetables, Pear, Apple Mango, Pear & Banana, Carrot, Apple, Banana and Strawberry and Sweet Potato, giving your little one a diverse selection of fruits and vegetables to please their budding palate. Which you know I am a huge fan of. Diversity in a child's diet, from a very early age, helps them to like an array of vegetables and fruits as they grow.

Oils for Pregnancy and Post-Partum Care

7/21/2020

I can't express enough just how THANKFUL I am to have oils and natural wellness as an integral part of this pregnancy and birth.

With Greyson, I had JUST begun my natural journey and didn't use oils until he was an infant. While they were a Godsend then, I wish I would've been able to use them through pregnancy, labor and birth. Maybe I would have an easier natural birth experience if I had them in my arsenal. Only God knows for sure, but I'm bringing out all the oily big guns this time around for baby girl.

Below I've composed a list of the oils that I am using in my pregnancy, as well as the oils that will be used alongside my doula's support at home and while in the hospital and the oils I will use for mine and the babies post-partum care.

I will also be putting together a babies and kids best oils post soon as well.

To read about my first natural birth story with Grey, click here.

Oils for Pregnancy

  • Alkalime
I used this for heartburn and morning sickness. Amazing!
  • R.C. and Eucalyptus Radiata
With baby girl I developed stuffiness all through my first trimester. Diffusing R.C. or Eucalyptus and using it in the shower helped a ton!
  • Panaway
For muscle aches, sciatica, hip aches. All the things.
  • Deep Relief Cream
Same as above. I prefer cream to oil when putting it on large areas.
  • Ningxia Red
Drinking this everyday, 2-3 oz., is SO beneficial in so many ways. From placenta health, to energy from pregnancy fatigue to stabilizing blood sugar levels, Ningxia Red in my fridge is a must have everyday.
  • Circulation Blend
I use a circulation blend of tangerine, cypress and helichrysum in the evenings before bed to help with circulation while I sleep. I mix a few drops of each oil with 2 TBSP. of avocado oil and rub from my ankles to my knees in upward strokes. Ningxia Red also helps with this.
  • Edema Blend
During the third trimester, I, as well as so many mamas, get swelling either in the lower extremities or all throughout the body. In addition to staying off your feet as much as possible, you can use this Edema Blend on your feet, ankles and legs by mixing cypress, tangerine and geranium with a carrier oil of your choice.
  • Group B Strep Prevention Blend
I did this while I was pregnant with Grey to prevent GBS prior to my appointment to be tested. In addition to taking multiple Apple Cider Vinegar Sitz baths the week leading up to my appointment, I also used three drops of Thieves on my feet every night, five drops Valor along my spine morning and night, took the Life 5 Probiotic every day and drank lemon and thieves in my tea.
  • Rose Ointment
Amazing for tears, sore nipples and healing hemorrhoids.
  • Peace and Calming
For all things anxiety leading up to birth and to diffuse each night to help with pregnancy insomnia and restless sleep.

See my expanded post on perineum care below. What to do at one month out from birth, three weeks out from birth, one week out from birth and day of labor onset to help with labor so there is less risk of tearing.
Picture

Oils for Labor

  • Clary Sage
One drop massaged on ankles every 15 minutes can help with dilation.
  • Present Time
Diffuse to stay present in the moment. Newborn life can feel VERY overwhelming.
  • Surrender
Release negative emotions by applying 1-2 drops or diffuse.
  • Release
Release negative emotions by applying 1-2 drops or diffuse.
  • Peace and Calming
For rest, relaxation and a clear mind through the sleepless newborn fog. This oil helps immensely with my anxiety.
  • Labor Blend
  • Frankincense
  • En-R-Gee
Smell directly from bottle for energy, or apply to back of neck, behind ears or on feet for a natural boost.
  • Diffuser Blend
Whether a hospital room, your bedroom or birth center, have this blend going continually through labor. Have your partner or doula refill if needed. 4 Drops Lavender, 4 Drops Frankincense, 2 Drops Ylang Ylang, 2 Drops Roman Chamomile.
  • After-Birth Blend
You can use this oil blend with a carrier oil of your choice over your abdomen right after birth to help expel the placenta and tone the uterus. Have this premade in a bottle for your doctor, husband, midwife or doula to apply. 5-10 drops geranium, 5-10 drops of lavender and 7-15 drops of jasmine.
Picture

Oils for Post-Partum Care

  • Frankincense
Applied to both my head as well as the head of the baby right after birth as an anointing oil. Highly healing.
  • Trauma Life
For the crown of my head and my feet for immediately after birth. Great to inhale as well.
  • Lavender
On feet for relaxation and post-birth sleep.
  • Gentle Baby
Over me to bond with baby. And for my abdominal area after birth.
  • Claraderm Spray
I use this post-birth on the vaginal area for a natural alternative to store brand sprays that can be filled with chemicals.
  • Peppermint
If you're having a hard time urinating after birth, put a few drops of this in your toilet bowl. You could alternatively use eucalyptus over the bladder area.
  • En-R-Gee
  • Hemorrhoid Relief Blend
Combine the following oils with 4 drops of carrier oil and apply topically to the area. One drop peppermint, two drops helichrysum, 2 drops geranium and 2 drops cypress. Repeat as needed for comfort and healing.
  • Rose
Rose is HIGHLY healing. Inhale daily or wear as perfume to combat PPD or PPA. Frankincense also works.
  • Joy
Inhale daily or wear as perfume to combat PPD or PPA. I will be doing a blend of Joy and Rose in diffusers and as my perfume as I struggled with Grey for the first few months.
  • Thyromin
To regulate thyroid and post-partum moods.
  • Present Time
To stay present in each moment.

Grey Turns Four

My sweet boy.

Raising you has been the most beautiful, exciting, adventurous, tiring (haha), God-filled adventure of our lives. You are the most amazing little man I would  have ever hoped to know and I get to be your mom.

You are modest.
You always have to have a shirt and shorts or pants on at all times. Even when we are home and I tell you it's totally cool if kids chill in no shirt. You won't have it. And I find that charming and totally opposite of toddler life. You prefer buttoned, nice clothes to sporty attire and you love picking out your own outfits everyday now. Something I both super love but makes me a little sad at the same time.

You are funny.
You are the prankster, you love making us laugh. You want to learn jokes just to tell them to us. You make silly faces, and dance around and are just the cutest little goofball.

You are smart.
You blow me away with the concepts you continue to grasp. You've been a little smart cookie since infancy, but as you grow, it becomes more apparent to your dad and I and those around you just how special your little brain is. I am beyond thrilled to be your teacher and can't wait to see everything you become.

Picture
Picture
You are talented.
You have a knack for science like dad, and are falling in love with music like mama. You asked for a real piano and guitar and microphone for your birthday and you're starting to like to perform. You can oddly do some really good modern dance moves that we've never showed you. I love seeing all the little ways you're becoming you.

You are adorable.
Like, beyond. Your sweet face and your silly smiles melt me every, single, time. Your little voice and the way you still say a few words silly even though your vocabulary is so vast are things to hold onto and remind me you're not big quite yet. Like "fa-leter" for theatre.

You are loving.
You give the best hugs, just like your dad. Firm, like you mean it every time you hug us. You constantly tell me how you'll take care of me and your sister always, especially when dads not home. You sing your baby sister songs in my belly and tell us all throughout the day how much you love us. I can't get enough of you. My bestie.

You are strong.
You know what you want. Which gave us some struggles this year, haha, but we've seemed to work a lot of that out. Praise. You are a master negotiator and a go-getter, which will serve you so, so well later in life.  You need to be a strong man to take on this world, and God's guidance and your leadership strength will get you far my love.

You love God.
Already you take time to pray (you pray for your dad out loud while he is at work and it melts me) - you always remind us to pray at dinner, you pray when you hear a siren go by and you always thank God for your family at night. You are a darling soul and I'm honored to be your mama.

You're Tall.
Still one of the tallest toddlers around. I'm convinced you will be over 6 feet tall and you can carry me around when I'm a little old lady because you'll have a foot on me, haha. You are almost in a size 5 and I can't believe how much you've grown in every way this year.

Happy, Happy Birthday to my best friend, my sweetest son, my first born and my world. Mommy and daddy ADORE you and we hope, that even during a "quarantine birthday" you have the most magical and joyful day. We love you. You are four.

Grey is 3.5! Another Half Birthday Celebration (with Lemon Cupcakes!)

2/7/2020

That fun time of year has come for another half birthday celebration!

When Grey was just six months old (and I was a new mama itching to throw a party for her first baby!) I decided that I wanted to start a tradition then and there that would celebrate his half birthday each year.

That first year I whipped up a small batch of vanilla cupcakes with dye-free rainbow sprinkles (because he couldn't eat any yet, you know, no teeth and all) and we had a little celebration, just Doug, Grey and I in our kitchen in our first home as a family.

When he turned the ripe old age of 18 months, it was chocolate grain-free cupcakes with piped on vanilla frosting (that time he got to sample his first cupcake and looooooved it! And had his first dose of sugar.)

By the time he hit 2.5 he was as invested in this tradition as I was and chose his OWN cupcake flavor AND design. These Spider-Man cupcakes were not only a hit at home, Party City went on to use them in their advertising! (Still surreal that that happened!) They are pictured below followed by the cupcakes he chose this year.

Grey chose vanilla and lemon cupcakes this year because he "looooooves lemon".

And now my sweet little man is three and a half, and in true blog tradition of him hitting these milestones, an open letter to my little man along with some photos of my darling. For the full lemon cupcake recipe we enjoyed while celebrating this occasion, you can find the full recipe post here.

My Grey,

You are three and a half and I can't begin to tell you how MUCH I love and adore you. You. You are smarter than any child I've ever been blessed enough to know. You know all of your letters. Can count to 20. You LOVE to make people laugh and I swear you could act on television. This year you did just that as my co-star of our new show and you light up any room you enter.

You are compassionate and loving. You are thoughtful and care so much for me and your family. You have the biggest crush on your little friend Nora and think the world of your cousins Jillian and Jordan.

You do SO well in preschool at home with me. You LOVE science and animals and don't care so much for art or drawing. Though I ADORE your little people that look like potatoes. You love when I read you to sleep and your favorite books and movies are superhero anything (preferably Spider-Man or Iron Man), Star Wars, Disney movies, Daniel Tiger and our joint newfound love of Peppa Pig.

You are loving our new home, though you tell me your homesick for your old house sometimes. You grew in such HUGE ways once we moved in. You potty trained yourself, started sleeping in your own bed (half the night, but its a HUGE improvement, you weaned at three and stopped napping completely). That last one I wasn't crazy about, haha, but its just another way that shows me you are not my little baby anymore. You LOVE being outside, you are such a nature kid just like your dad and I love seeing you and the freedom you feel when you're playing on our new land.

You are my kid, no longer my baby, my kid. My sweet, adorable, darling, amazing, awe-inspiring kid who makes me want to be better every day.

I will celebrate you as many times and on as many days as we can, because there is nothing in this life that is worth celebrating more than you.

Love,
Mommy

Grey chose vanilla and lemon cupcakes this year because he "looooooves lemon".

As the school year begins, and we prepare to move into our newly renovated modern farmhouse, #PimentalRanch, I am setting up all the easy solutions for our days to run smoothly. I call these solutions my daily rhythms.

One of them, even though we home school, or maybe especially because we home school, is having our meals prepped and ready to grab at mealtime. Having them prepped for the day or week ahead, helps me keep the meals on our school table nutritious and balanced.

As a nutritionist mama to a kiddo that loves veggies, (praise! Hoping all my littles share this love, haha), I love having vegan mealtime options. Your family needn't sacrifice taste or texture when opting for vegan entrees in a school lunch. You can parent young ones while leading a plant based life. Gardein offers a large selection of products to choose from for variety throughout the week.

Our favorites this week have been the Sweet and Sour Porkless Bites and the Seven-Grain Crispy Tenders that we picked up at Sprouts. I'm sharing a list of options below to accompany each entree for a well-rounded meal for your kids or yourself.

Good for the body and the planet, it's choices we can feel good about. With a wide-variety of the products on a path to Non-GMO verified, Gardein doesn't use any artificial colors or flavors. This is HUGE on my mama radar - artificial coloring and flavor can cause so many problems in our bodies, that we want to protect our kids bodies from being exposed to things we can prevent.

For those of you with soy or gluten sensitive kiddos, the ones shown wouldn't be an option but they do offer gluten-free varieties!. For those who can enjoy these ingredients, these are a great option - good for little growing bodies.

#NowMoreThanEver Disney Playdate Party

7/23/2019

Our #NowMoreThanEver Playdate Party was graciously hosted by the wonderful Walt Disney company.

This past weekend we had the BEST time throwing a Lion Guard themed playdate birthday party in celebration of our sweet Grey turning THREE years old. THREE. Seriously mamas, where does time go? I know everyone says that - but, man.

Disney graciously provided what we needed for our festivities in support of their #NowMoreThanEver campaign with Disney World and they blessed us with the BEST party, along with their party sponsor partners Michael Angelos foods, Pillow Pet, Jakks Pacific Toys and Popped Passion.

Below I share all the magical details of the day, tips for throwing your own Disney playdate party and bring you up to date on what exciting things Disneyworld has in store for 2019!
Picture
Picture
Picture

Grey had recently gotten into watching the Lion Guard adventures so he was thrilled to see all of the decor. For a play date party you can keep it simple with plates, napkins and cups to have on hand for bite size snacks, a few party games and decor to liven up the play or party space. We added a few jungle elements to really bring the Lion Guard vision to life, as well as some large stuffed Lion King and Lion Guard stuffed animals we picked up to join in on the fun.

PLAYDATE TIP #1: Choose a theme that your little one will get excited about! Disney has SO many options that you can find at your local retailers or online.

To see all of the items Disney sent, you can watch our unboxing on my http://www.instagram.com/noshandnurture profile under my DISNEY highlight on my profile.

One of our Disney playdate sponsors, Jakks Toys gifted Grey the sweetest Ariel mermaid doll that has not left his side and provided a princess dress to his very best friend. Pillow Pets sent a Mickey Mouse pillow pet that will be PERFECT for all of our drives to Disneyland. Michael Angelo's supplied delicious Italian fare and Popped Passion gave the cutest, most unique addition to our dessert bar - a popcorn cake covered in candy and sprinkles, every kids dream!

In addition to our Disney partners, the lovely bakers at Let's Kiss and Cake Up! and Moffas Muffin Tops out of Peoria, AZ supplied the most amazing cake and cookies for the party.

PLAYDATE TIP #2: KEEP FOOD SIMPLE. A COUPLE DESSERT OPTIONS AND ONE OR TWO MEAL SELECTIONS SHOULD BE SUFFICIENT FOR A LUNCH TIME PLAYDATE.
Picture
Picture
Picture

We invited eight of Grey's best little friends to celebrate this joyous day with us. As it was a playdate party geared towards preschool aged little ones we aimed for simple activities that they would love but that was stress free on the parents - you can keep it simple!

I purchased Lion King color books and packs of crayons and made a coloring station. Disney provided Lion King masks for the kids to wear and I picked up some extra princess crowns for the girls who wanted to play Disney Princesses.

PLAYDATE TIP #3: MAX THE ACTIVITIES AT AROUND 3. TODDLERS WILL HAVE FUN JUST PLAYING WITH ONE ANOTHER AND TAKING IN THE SIGHTS AND THE FOOD. COLORING PAGES, A GAME AND A FEW TOYS WILL BE ALL THE ENTERTAINMENT YOU NEED.

Disney provided a couple of printable games as well as a "Pin the Badge on the Lion Guard", as well as a pinata. All in all, plenty of things to keep three year olds busy in between lunch and dessert.

Besides the opening of Galaxy's Edge in Disneyworld August 29th, you can visit the Walt Disney World website to see all of what's going on in the park this year. And while you're on the website, allow yourself to explore and dream a little. Maybe plan a trip for you and your family.

We will be visiting Disneyland in August and are headed to Disneyworld in the fall/winter season. We just can't get enough Disney.

All in all, the day was a HUGE success and keeping it simple was key. Thank again to Disney and all of the sponsors for all of the magic.

Leave your favorite Disney memory below and tell me what you're most looking forward to seeing this year or next!

Tiny Truths To Reflect On This Easter

4/18/2019

One question we get asked a lot as Christian parents is how we handle the holidays. Do we celebrate with the Easter Bunny and Santa Claus and all of the secular celebration activities that align with Christ centered holidays?

In truth, this was something I hadn't given much thought to pre-motherhood, as we as children did all of those things along with reading the word and going to church. In regards to Easter, we did make the decision to not shine a big light on those "other" things. We focus on Christ first, and our celebrations and gifts are centered there, yet we don't deny him Easter egg hunts or baking cookies on Christmas eve.

I did a big post on Easter baskets and gifts for children in general in a previous post, Gifted - An Essay On The Importance of Teaching Value, that you can read by clicking here.

Yet, I wanted to share something SUPER sweet and special we are gifting Grey this Easter and there is also info below on how you can get one for you as well below in my giveaway!
Picture

I've been wanting to graduate Grey out of his first infant bible and I was blessed by Front Gate Media to recieve a complimentary The Tiny Truths Illustrated Bible and I FELL IN LOOOOOOVE. It is true to the bible, presented in a way that engages children. It allows children to discover WHO God is, who WE are to Him and what we were made for.

With whimsical illustrations and engaging storytelling, The Tiny Truths Illustrated Bible
presents all your favorite stories and diversely represented characters from the Old and New Testaments.

Uniquely presented in a way that connects each individual story to the next, this book introduces children to the most important ideas and characters of the Bible while also making clear how everything fits together to tell one big story––the story of God’s love for his children.

I love that it's larger format than his previous small bibles and the illustrations are adorable and helps bring each story to life so well.

I can't wait to see him dig into each story as he grows and I would love for one of you lovely readers win one for your little one!

Celebrating Two and a Half

2/5/2019

My Grey...

Today you turned two and a half and it's been a while since I wrote you one of my open letters, so here it is.

You are pure magic my sweet boy, and today has been lovely. Our tradition of half birthday cupcake baking makes us both smile. You chose your own this year, with a trip to the party store, you decided on Spider Man cupcakes because he is clearly one of your favorite heroes of the moment. Along with Iron Man and anyone from Star Wars.

Each month with you, each milestone, each age, continues to be my very new favorite. Sure, we have our challenges because #toddlerhood and #firsttimemom, but you are something so special. Your daddy and I both know it to be true.

You're incredibly smart and can count to 20 and sing your ABC's. You know all of your colors, including dark and light, metallics and more which totally blows me away. Your concept knowledge astounds us daily, and you'll do anything to make us laugh.
Picture
Picture

Your favorite toys are doing puzzles, playing Legos, battling super heroes, playing board games with mom and dad and doing pretty much ANYTHING outside. You've been to Disneyland 4 times and you talk about it all the time. You also regularly ask to go to the beach and have an interesting fascination with knowing where things are and studying your USA map.

Your favorite movies right now are Spiderman 3, Spiderman Homecoming, Toy Story, Monsters Inc. and Peter Pan.

You're still a mommy's boy (and I pray you always will be), but you're starting to find special things you love to do with just your daddy. You also sleep SO much better when cuddled next to him. You're still nursing, and we are so blessed we've had this long of a journey. I never thought I'd be a mama who nursed into toddlerhood but I am so glad I've been able to give you that health boost and comfort when you've needed it.

I truly love you more everyday. Sometimes SO much it aches. When I'm bone tired, and you've fallen asleep next to me, I will stay awake a while and sit and watch you. Soaking this time in. Your long lashes, curly blonde hair and slow breaths in the night light's glow are something awe inspiring. It's all so perfect, and I know before long you'll grow from my toddler into my big kid. Just in the way you've grown from my sweet infant into my wonderful, wonderful two year old.

Loving you is the best adventure and I hope today was as wondrous, fun and magical for you as it was for me.
Picture
Picture

Here's to two and a half. To dress up and playing pretend.

To all your cute words and big vocabulary. Our late night chats and listening to you sing songs.

To learning your personality more everyday so I can be the best mommy I can be.

To watching you bond with your dad and our family and friends who love you so well.

Cheers my little chicken nugget, I love you and everything you are. Happy Half Birthday sweetie!

Devon supports parents through their personal parenting journey by helping them live each moment in the moment with less fear and more love. She developed this conference to dispel the myth that toddlerhood is terrible and to help parents understand their toddler’s behavior on a deeper level.

During this conference, you will learn:
- How to help your toddler become a better sleeper.
- Strategies to transform picky eating and create healthy eating habits.
- How to empower your toddler and give them a sense of control over their lives without becoming permissive
- The optimal window for potty training and how to get started.
- How to use mindfulness to reduce your reactivity to your toddler’s behavior and cultivate patience.
- And so much more!

about

Nosh & Nurture was born of this journey I am on to better the health of myself, my family and those around me.  What started as a simple compilation of recipes has grown to a all-around lifestyle journal with ways to incorporate organic products into your home, pantry and beauty cabinet.  I also include stories on pregnancy, new motherhood, travel, Proverbs 31 marriage, and spiritual health, as I am a Christian who couldn't do any of this without my Lord & Savior Jesus Christ. For more of my story you can click here.

All recipes are gluten-free and dairy-free with a lot of soy-free, grain-free, sugar-free options.
