RUNWAY TEENS GOSSIP CORNER: Fresh Faces & Hot Places

Gossip Corner brings you up to date on the Hollywood scene and the stars that play in it. This issue we are talking hot places and fresh faces.   In January, after the holiday season of shopping and high-end gift exchange, (another Prada bag perhaps or a new winter white Bentley?) stars will leave tinsel town to visit the beautiful city of Park City, Utah for this nation’s biggest film festival, Sundance. We are loving some of the sneak peeks of what will be shown, as some of our squeaky clean favorites are getting a little dirty in gritty new roles. Kate Bosworth will be returning to the shore in Big Sur, a film based on the 1962 novel by literary icon Jack Kerouac. It is a deep, inspiring film that seems promising and with Bosworth being a fashion favorite, Runway Teen is anxious to see the 60’s styling of the film. Even darker is the role that heartthrob Shia Lebouf takes on, starring in Charlie Countryman. The film finds two lost souls on a dangerous adventure through Eastern Europe evoking suspense at every turn, and of course there is romance interlaced throughout. When the stars are not taking in a film, they will be hitting the slopes and we look forward to bringing you an update on the hot hookups and even hotter fashions of Sundance.


The glitterati will also soon be flocking to Las Vegas as Britney Spears begins her residency.  With her new album, simply titled Britney Jean, set to hit shelves on her birthday, December 3rd, she promises the long-awaited eighth studio release will be the most personal and heartfelt album to date. Only time will tell if this is the true comeback the world has expected from Ms. Spears, though we know no matter what happens (another husband, another baby, dare I say another crazy makeover?) she will put on a sizzling hot show in Sin City.


In other pop star news, Miley Cyrus (we know, we know, the Miley Cyrus thing has been done to death lately since the VMAs appearance and the slew of headlines that followed, it’s just one more we promise), has redesigned her website, and we just had to comment on it because it is like a train wreck you can’t not look at.  If you haven’t yet paid it a visit I must first warn you, it’s like taking a glimpse into her mixed up little mind, but for entertainment purposes it’s worth a visit. A few features: she makes out with herself in a mirror, tour dates are outlined in marijuana leaves, animated photos show her grabbing herself,  and other disturbing images abound… it’s all enough to make you go hmmm and it makes you really wonder, is this what girls today are inspired by? For the future of womankind, and for fashion, we really hope not.


Luckily, some fresh faces are showing young women how to be poised, sophisticated and classically beautiful. The Sherri Hill Spring 2014 fashion show showcased beautiful dresses for the upcoming prom season and two starlets shined among the crowd. Kendal Jenner, who walked alongside sister Kylie during part of the show, and Sadie Robertson, whose family recently hit it big as the stars of Duck Dynasty, are two ladies that we think deserve the spotlight they are currently basking in the glow of. New York Daily News recently reported that Ms. Jenner is mixed up in a sex tape scandal, though her camp has squashed the rumors, and with the bright future ahead of her, we hope to see her continue on the path of fashion and philanthropy that she is doing so well with. As for Ms. Robertson, she stands firm in her faith and expresses the appreciation she has for the success of their television show and that her family has a platform where they can speak about their values. As for the teen demographic, Sadie started her own foundation that is broadcast on YouTube through a series of videos titled “We Are Different” that inspires teens to stand firm in their faith.

It is inspiring to see teens making a difference in Hollywood.

And though it is not groundbreaking news we had to add this tip, all budding fashionistas take note; Khloe Kardashian recently gave her expert advice on taking the perfect selfie. “Keep the camera above you, below gives you a double chin.”

Thanks K, we will remember that.

Alberta Ferretti
The Ferretti show sparkled with feminine oceanic beauty. Delicate fabrics moved with grace against a backdrop of cerulean. Sequins on a few of the ensembles glittered in the light as a mermaids scales would glitter against the setting sun. Ferretti’s imaginative line shows true creativity. One of the more delicate pieces was an ethereal pearl white gown that displayed a sheer and intricate beaded bodice.  One of the more daring ensembles on the catwalk featured black satin shorts and an organza top with black lace overlays covering the models chest.

 

BLUGIRL
The runway for the BluGirl Spring/Summer show appeared as a group of sophisticated, and slightly provocative, women on their way to a garden tea party. With floral crowns and straw hats a top their heads the models were adorned in a sweet mixture of femininity. Sweaters paired with floral knee-length skirts and sweet ruffle-accented dresses cinched at the waist with bows, one might believe them all to be sugary sweet. On the contrary, BluGirl always shows us that a woman can have edge and with the overt sheerness of the pieces, paired with exotic animal printed notations; we are shown that the naughty pairs well with the nice.



DSQUARED
Female power dominated the DSquared catwalk. In a word the show could be summed up as simply as, attitude. Leather, chunky gold and silver jewelry and police style caps rounded out the show and tops were paired with skirts and shorts that sat high on the models thighs. Leather gloves and motorcycle jackets added a hint of raw masculinity in with the power of pure female sexuality. Following in the ever-popular animal print trend, black and white leopard dresses paired with leather hearts, were seen throughout the collection. Finally, the pièce de résistance was the all leather floor length dress with the buckled waistline, gold side zipper and dramatic gold neckpiece.



Fendi
The strength of geometric shapes and patterns of the Fendi line felt ahead of its time. A form of cubism in its own right the pieces were color blocks of mixed fabrics including the designers take on “summer leather.” An impressive note is that the leather is seamless and makes for a light wear. The multiple lengths seen through the jackets and dresses are “designed to have your eyes drawn into the pieces,” as opposed to being drawn to them, the designer goes on to say.  Save for a few hints of melon and teal in a high-waisted short ensemble the lines main color palettes falls in black, icy blues and warm caramels and yellows. The show ended with an explosive punch of color from the elaborate light reflecting stoned dress with capelet inspired shoulders.

 
Just Cavalli
Trending this season is a designers love to tie in oceanic inspiration to this seasons collections, and JustCavalli is no exception. Except this line isn’t about simplistic beauty in mermaids and crystal blue waters on the shore, with Cavalli’s line we get to dive a little deeper to see the exotic creatures of the sea that Cavalli counts as one of his inspirations for the pieces in his line. The beautiful bright hues of sapphire and lime can be seen in a sheer off the shoulder top and mini-dress. The models hairstyles reflect a refreshing, clean, beach wave feel and their natural make-up feels sun kissed with shimmer around their eyes. In addition to the tropical fish, Cavalli listed a trip to India as inspiration and wanted to capture the beauty in the exotic flora, which gives us the color rich drop-waist dresses, and multi-hued foot wear. Keeping to his love of the hip-hop style his lines are not constricting and play well with the models movement.



Prada
Miuccia Prada definitely brought something unexpected to the catwalk this season. The show started with boxy, almost space age, designs with largely oversized tops in black and deep green, paired with clam diggers, long shorts and metallic booties. As the show transpired it began to tell a story, showing vintage Japanese silhouettes, Geisha inspired looks, and a more traditional color palette as it progressed. Kimono’s and Japanese footwear appeared accentuated by florals and pops of deep red. The show ended with toned down neutral satin pieces in blush pink, tying the show’s theme together nicely and proving once again that Prada knows how to tell a story through fashion.

 
Versace
Donatella stepped away, if only for a moment, from gothic bondage and moved into simpler and softer pieces, mixed with a little Greek Mythology, for her latest line. “I wanted to challenge myself to do fluidity and lightness...” she stated in regards to the latest in her fashion empire, and with the miniscule size of a few of the ensembles, she has done just that. Dainty high-cut, lace-embellished shorts paired with cropped tops make a perfect addition to any jet-setting girls’ summer wardrobe, and her drop waisted brightly hued dresses are reminiscent of a fabulous beach soiree. That is, if you do not mind Medusa joining the party. While the show started with simple lines and circular lace cutouts, the rest of the line hinted at warrior chic, featuring Medusa’s head in print as well as on metal buttons. The gowns intricate details were worthy to be worn by Greek goddesses or warrior princesses. Leave it to Donatella to “lighten her style”, only to give us something even more beautiful and breathtaking.


Gucci
Gucci’s line takes us back to classic Italy. It is purely Rome in the 60’s and 70’s where women do not shy away from head-to-toe hues in bright pinks and cobalt. The show started strong with a bright pink belted tunic and trouser ensemble, paired with slicked back hair and oversized classics reminiscent of the time. Graphic patterns in similar hues and lighter fabrics followed until the show transitioned into classic black and white.  A beautiful, pure white, deep V-neck, floor length gown featured billowing ruffled sleeves and rounded out the show with beautiful dramatic femininity.

London Fashion Week presented us with a diverse, and absolutely lovely, mix of trends for Spring 2014 both on and off the runway.  The street style was an eclectic blend of the trends we saw throughout the designers’ displays on the runway and it stood to prove that the London fashionistas were truly tuned in to what is going to be popular come winter thaw.

The first of five, of the most popular trends of the season, were separates that shine.  Crystal-adorned dresses and bodysuits, a plethora of metallic materials and mirrored embellishments will be available to dress up many wardrobes.  Tom Ford was a fan of using sequins, Topshop used broken-mirror inspired additions on sundresses and Christopher Kane opted for shimmering fabrics for his collection. Tadashi Shoji presented a dress comprised of pure white sequins, accented with feathers and Marissa Webb showed us a favorite in a champagne metallic high waist skirt.  The designers this season backed up our belief that a little sparkle is always a good idea.

Feminine florals are always a classic spring trend and have made their return for 2014.  Opting for a palette of lighter, pastel hues, fashion house Burberry Prorsum displayed beautiful florals on belts, trenches and delicate tops.  Mulberry opted for a more retro palette with oversized florals in bright orange and navy.  BCBG and Rebecca Taylor used a rainbow palette for their floral pieces.  When paired with dainty flats and simplistic jewelry, you can incorporate floral pieces into your wardrobe through skirts, sundresses, capris or tops.

One way to wear a feminine floral skirt is to pair it with a boyfriend-styled, button up.  Bringing us to our third spring trend, boy meets girl fashion.  Mixing in masculine touches with feminine pieces, designers showed ability to fuse the two sides together seamlessly.  Tailored, nipped-waist skirts pair well with boxy-shouldered tops, while delicate camisoles couple with slouchy boyfriend pants.  The key is making sure to keep it balanced.  Designer Matthew Williamson paired basic tees with flirty skirts, while Henry Holland put models in trucker hats and lace skirts to lend an edge. Alexander Wang had models strutting down the runway in what could have been mistaken for their boyfriend’s pajamas, though we rather loved it, because what isn’t sexier and more comfortable than your guy’s pjs?

The last trend to get you through from spring to fall is pure edge.  Dark and avant-garde pieces, sharp edges, deep folds and deeper shades such as blacks and browns have made a place for themselves in spring fashion this season.  Leather jackets can be worn with lighter undergarments to incorporate heavier fabrics without being overly layered.  David Koma, with his line inspired by Japanese samurais, incorporated warrior-esque pieces to represent tough femininity.  Tom Ford’s collection also represented a stronger woman with body conscious lace and leather pieces, and though the house of Erdem incorporated florals, they did so in a darker palette of blacks and deep blues.  J Mendel created a daring black netted dress with strategically placed cuts, proving that lace and mesh make the perfect dress fabric choices for evening.

Do not be afraid to mix and match the trends.  Pair floral leggings with an oversized rock tee for a bold combination, or try a metallic dress with a leather jacket for a vibe that hints at retro eighties, which designer Ryan Lo could appreciate this year with his 80’s inspired line-up.  With a palette of such a wide array of colors and fabrics, the possibilities are endless. And remember, spring is a time of renewal and creation.  Create a new look that is uniquely you, by gaining inspiration by the amazing fashion seen throughout London. 

GOSSIP CORNER – Summer 2014

Runway Teen is back with another round of juicy gossip and this issue is all about love, marriage and baby carriages.  Summer love is in the air and romances are blooming.  Some new and some not so new, we are seeing many relationships being rekindled this season. 

During Coachella weekend, it seems that The Beibs and Selena Gomez may have been getting cozy once again.  An eyewitness stated that prior to Bieber's surprise performance the two were seen holding hands and walking together.  The question of “are they or aren’t they?” has been asked as often as the question, “can Beiber make a strong comeback after his recent indiscretions?”  We are hoping so, for his sake, and his millions of Beliebers worldwide that are rooting for him.

While we are pretty sure the topic of Jelena being on-again, off-again is getting tired, one hot couple who we’d like to see sizzle this summer is Kendall Jenner and Harry Styles.  Also reported to have re-sparked their flame during the music fest, after going months without connecting, the One Direction star and reality starlette were spotted holding hands while enjoying a musical performance.  Nothing like young love in the desert.

One relationship that may have cooled, while others were heating up, was the friendship between Selena and the Jenner sisters.  Photographed together through the music fests entirety, Gomez returned home only to unfollow all of her friends and connections on Instagram, claiming that people she had been connecting with lately haven’t been the best influences and that she wants to just focus on “good things, like music and church.”  We are all about positive vibes, and good influence on young stars, so if she is taking a stand on doing what is right for her then we say “Go Selena!” 

In wedding news, it is all about the Kardashian/West wedding plans.  While they reportedly privately got married stateside in May, their lavish affair with friends and family is set to take place in France this summer.  Inviting a modest number of just one-hundred guests, the wedding is sure to be a beautiful spectacle if we can expect it to be anything like her last televised nuptials.  Reportedly having put three dresses on hold for the occasion, we cannot wait to see what the fashion star will debut her walk down the aisle in.  This wedding is a first for West while it will be a third for the reality star.  We are hoping third times a charm and that she is finally found her happily ever after.

And of course, who doesn’t adore babies?  Especially celebrity babies, with their off-the-wall monikers and their trendy baby gear.  Expecting a bouncing baby girl soon is American Idol alum Kelly Clarkson.   Photographed recently in Nashville, her adorable baby bump is growing by the day. 

While this baby is a first for the What Doesn’t Kill You singer, Britney Spears ex, Kevin Federline recently welcomed his sixth little one.  Father to Kori, 13, and Kaleb, 10, with ex-girlfriend Shar Jackson, Sean, 8, and Jayden, 7, with Spears and Jordan, 2, with current wife Victoria Prince, their new daughter Peyton rounds out the clan nicely.  Maybe he is trying to put together his own back-up dance team.

Christina Aguilera has been trying to keep a low profile lately.  Keeping her baby bump private, she stepped out in Manhattan recently with fiancé Matt Rutler and posted to a photo to her Instagram with a caption that read “Baby loves N.Y.C”.  We can only assume that little baby girl Aguilera is going to have the most fashionable wardrobe, and we’d be lying if we said we aren’t slightly jealous of her soon-to-be lullaby serenades by her songstress mama.

Last but not least, the adorableness that is Mila Kunis cannot go unmentioned.  Expecting her first child with Two and a Half Men star Ashton Kutcher, Kunis is absolutely radiant. Also expecting a girl, Hollywood is about to see an influx of mini-starlet’s in the making. 

Anyone taking any bets on who will give their offspring the most outlandish names?  We are hoping, for all children involved, it doesn’t get too out of hand.  They do have to go through life with the name, after all.

Hair, for as long as we women have had it, has been our best accessory and, at times, our worst foe. It is constantly changing.  I am not just talking about yours (and mine for that matter) on a daily basis. I am referring to the styles, the colors, and the popular lengths through time. Going back over fifty years, we can see how quickly trends change. Back in the fifties and sixties, we saw the dramatic beehive make a big statement, as well as feminine flips. Progressing into the seventies and eighties, we had Farrah debut her classic Charlie’s Angel blowout style that was ever popular for almost two decades. The motto also seemed to be “the bigger the better”, where stock in Aquanet and crimping irons surely soared. The nineties brought us edgier cuts and females were seen using more hair product to piece out shorter styles moving into more modern looks. Always looking ahead to the future, as we do in fashion, we work to try to improve upon all facets of what hair can be. Working with texture, thinking outside the proverbial color box, and bringing it all together to make it shine.  Here you will find some tips to do just that as you get a glimpse into what spring 2013 will bring us in the way of hot styles according to Runway and some of the hottest names in fashion.

The Deep Side Part
Tools Needed: High heat flatiron, strong hold hairspray, fine toothcomb, small elastic or bobby pins.
This low-maintenance look is sleek and dramatic in its own right. Start with your hair blown out and straightened stick straight (another trend making its comeback this season). You will be able to locate your own deep side part by lining it up with the outside of your eyebrow. If it feels unnatural, you may alternatively need to line it up with your brows natural arch. Using your comb, part your hair, bring it over, exposing your new part and comb smooth. Use hairspray to keep hair in place. Do not over-spray; just tame the hair that is wanting to fall away. You could also opt to use gel to give it a sleek and glam look for night. Pull hair tightly toward the back and secure with a bobby pin. You may also curl some soft waves in the hair hanging loose or secure in the back into a low small bun (pictured).

The Low Down – Buns & Ponytails
Tools Needed: A hairbrush and one small elastic. Hair wrap, pretty hair accessory or headband is optional.
Low buns and low ponies are getting a lot of attention this season. Being featured on runways internationally, as well as taking the spotlight in the press and social media, this low-key look is easy for all hairstyles and is very versatile. As well as being easily dressed up with the ever-popular hair scarf, this look takes little to no product and is easy to touch up on the go. For the low pony: brush hair back and tie with elastic at the base of your neck. You can leave it messy if you prefer and add a little product to give it a beachy feel, or smooth it back for a sleeker look. For the low bun: Style hair into low ponytail and tease lightly so that it becomes voluminous. Next, use a small elastic to keep in place.  Separate ponytail in two sections, top and bottom. Tease the upper half to give it more body. Create a small bun with the teased portion and secure by wrapping remaining un-teased hair around it. Secure with bobby pins.

The Look That’s Making Waves
Tools Needed: Hair dryer with diffuser, a surf spray, pick comb, hair wand, finishing crème
To obtain the perfect beach wave you can do one of two things. Ride the waves on a board, soaking up the sun and salty sea air (that would definitely achieve said look). Or, if you are like me and reside in the desert or other non-beachfront locale, you can follow these simple steps to look as though you had been hanging ten all afternoon. After your shower, use a pick comb to smooth out hair. (Do not dry with towel!) Pat it dry and let it naturally fall where it may, this will help it to not frizz. When it is slightly still damp, apply a surf spray (Bumble and Bumble has a nice one) and work it through your hair, scrunching it with your hands. Using your hairdryers diffuser, dry it almost completely and use a heated hair wand to wrap selected pieces around the wand lightly. While piecing it out, lightly curl sections until your desired look is achieved. Finish with a light finishing crème to give it a more finished look without weighing the hair down.

The Messy Braid
Tools Needed:  An elastic hair band, a light hold spray
Start with a basic side braid; do not smooth the ends as you go, as you want to achieve the “messy look”, fly-aways are o.k. in this instance. Once the braid is completed, secure with elastic about an inch from the bottom and pull on the braids sides to create the “undone” look. Spray for added security and in those two simple steps you have a messy braid.

Luke Bryan –
Luke Bryan has become every girl’s favorite country boy.  Extremely hot, and talented to boot, Bryan began his musical career as a songwriter.  Catching the attention of Capitol Records in Nashville, he soon started gaining his own fan base when he signed and released his debut studio album, I’ll Stay Me.  Fast-forwarding to 2014 this cute crooner is promoting his fourth album to date, Crash My Party, which includes his number one single, and tribute to his late siblings, “Drink a Beer”, proving Bryan is a smooth talker with a heart of gold.

Justin Timberlake –

Last year was a very successful one for pop music’s sexiest man.  Releasing two albums in the same year, The 20/20 Experience and The 20/20 Experience – 2 of 2, and gaining a production and writing credit on Beyoncé’s latest surprise album release, Timberlake showed he still has plenty of solid material to bring to the table.  Having recently snagged three Grammy Awards for “Best R&B song”, “Best Music Video” and “Best Rap/Sung Collaboration”, it seems as though Mr. Timberlake is not slowing down anytime soon and, as long as he keeps wearing those suits, we are just fine with that.


Drake –
Canadian rapper and recording artist, Drake, makes our top twelve for not only his catchy music and infectious smile, but for his drive.  Having grown up in front of the world on the teen hit Degrassi: The Next Generation, Drake saw his opportunity in the spotlight and released several mix tapes that caught the attention of Lil Wayne, giving him his big break in music.  Now, with 5 million albums sold worldwide, Drake continues to break down walls and look for new opportunities to display his songwriting, acting and musical talents.  Having just come of his “Would You Like A Tour” national tour, he made his debut hosting appearance on Saturday Night Live in January to rave reviews.  I guess when you coin the phrase, “YOLO” (you only live once), you take it seriously.

Adam Lambert –
Singer-songwriter and actor Adam Lambert is making serious waves in the industry.  After his stint ended on American Idol, Lambert went on to sign with RCA Records and release his first studio album, For Your Entertainment, which debuted at number three on the US Billboard 200.  Since 2009, his successes have ranged from critically acclaimed live performances on his Glam Nation tour, to a 2011 Grammy nomination for Best Male Pop Vocal.  Not only does Lambert possess an impeccable style all his own, the technically skilled tenor has also proved his acting chops by recently guest starring on the hit musical show Glee in 2013.  Lambert closed out the year strong, landing at number three on Forbes annual list of top earning American Idols.  The coming year looks quite bright for this hot young star.

Enrique Iglesias –
The sexy Spanish-American singer-songwriter on our top twelve Hottest Men Who Rock list is none other than Enrique Iglesias.  Having sold over 100 million units worldwide since his career took off with Universal Music at the turn of the millennium, Iglesias has been labeled one of the best-selling Spanish artists in history.  An impressive feat in itself, he is also an accomplished producer and actor, securing his triple-threat status.  Having recently released the title of his tenth studio album, Sex + Love, the 2014 album is set to follow the successful January 2014 release of his single “I’m A Freak” featuring Pitbull.  

Brendon Urie –
Lead vocalist of rock band Panic! At The Disco, Brendon Urie, is not only sexy but also extremely multi-talented.  Unknown to most fans, Urie is not just a talented vocalist and witty songwriter.  He can play a multitude of instruments including;  the trumpet, violin, cello, organ, accordion, bass, drums and guitar.  Take that in, ladies.  With their new album, Too Weird to Live, Too Rare to Die!, climbing the charts, they have embarked on a tour in support of the new release alongside Fall Out Boy.

Max George (The Wanted) –
The stunningly sexy English-Irish singer of The Wanted recently announced he has made the decision to take his career solo.  While the band takes a break over “creative differences”, George has been making strides to find success on his own, having recently made the move to Hollywood.  Though The Wanted plans to finish their world tour together, we are thankful for his first solo endeavor as a new model for Buffalo Jeans underwear line.  The campaign shows the rugged singer in various states of undress in the woods, which we won’t question, just enjoy.  Aside from his new modeling gig, George has been in the studio recently with hip-hop phenom Flo Rider and One Republic’s Ryan Tedder.

Adam Levine –
Everyone’s favorite member of Maroon 5 continues to scorch the pages of every magazine worldwide.  Having recently been crowned Sexiest Man Alive by People Magazine, we cannot say we would argue with their choice.  Not only does Levine have a powerhouse voice that keeps his singles at the top of the charts, his drive for success is intoxicating.  The three-time Grammy Award winner has helped two artists receive the winning title on The Voice, made his acting debut in the chilling horror series American Horror Story: Asylum, and most recently debuted his own self-titled fragrance line.

Keith Urban –
Australian-raised country singer Keith Urban could teach an American cowboy a thing or two about sex appeal.  As a musician, songwriter and American Idol Judge, Urban has had his fair share of success as of late.  Having recorded and released nine studio albums, Urban has charted on the U.S. country charts with over 25 of his singles, with 15 going to number one.  Our final vote, Nicole Kidman is one lucky woman. 

Blake Shelton –
Country music star, and The Voice coach, Blake Shelton is simply adorable.  Sexy for his down-to-earth approachability and pure talent, Shelton is a guy you would just like to grab a beer with.  That is, if he has a moment to relax.  Having charted over 24 country singles, including 15 number ones, he does not seem to stop.  Five-time Grammy nominee, Shelton is currently coaching on NBC’s The Voice where he has brought three of his singers to winning victory, more than any other coach on the series. 

Nick Jonas –
Nick Jonas skyrocketed to fame as part of the successful pop-rock boy band trio, The Jonas’ brothers, alongside his brothers Joe and Kevin.  Jonas, now 21, is making moves on his own in music and on the big screen.  As a veteran star of Disney films such as Camp Rock and Camp Rock 2: The Final Jam, Jonas has ventured into bigger roles since going solo such as his recurring guest spots on Hawaii 5-0 as well as on the late NBC show Smash. Currently starring in “Married to Jonas” alongside his beautiful wife Danielle, Nick can be seen Sunday nights on E!

Strong and sexy Cuban American recording artist Armando Perez, better known as Pitbull, has had quite a year.  The Latin Grammy winner has released seven albums to date, with his latest hit single “Timber” ft. Ke$ha currently gaining momentum and reaching #1 in twenty positions worldwide. Dating back to 1885, the time of its creation, the bicycle has been the main type of transportation in many regions of the world and still is today. Not only is a bicycle a greener mode of transportation it is also great exercise. Like any of life’s accessories, if you know how to shop, your bicycle can be your most fabulous accouterment and your greatest tool outside of your gym bag. With many varieties to explore, I will take you on a tour of some of the options when it comes to finding the right bicycle for not only your personal style type, but your regions terrain as well.

 

For The Commuter: The Road Bike
The most popular type of bike when shopping for the general casual biker, the perfect fit would be the road bike. The road bike, built for traveling at medium to high speeds on paved roads, are built less for fast bursts of speed and more for endurance and long distances when using them to commute or use for exercise. The road bike typically has more gear combinations, similar to a mountain bike and less high tech features making them user-friendly. Tires are usually narrower and high-pressure, rocky or uneven terrain is usually unadvised.

 

For The Adventurer: The Mountain Bike
Another popular type of bike is the mountain bike. While many consumers will purchase a mountain bike as their day-to-day transport bike, the mountain bike was designed for off-road cycling. Much like how the Jeep was made to standout against other SUV’s in the automobile world. Generally, mountain bikes can

be classified into four categories based on suspension: Rigid, hard tail, soft tail and full. This is important to inquire about when shopping because it will give the consumer insight on how the suspension handles, and how the wheels move. The mountain bike is made for the unpaved environment and therefor used mostly for sport and exercise over general transportation. Mountain bikes differ from road bikes in many ways. First being the larger tires made for gripping rocks and gravel. Second, their brakes are made to be more powerful than a general street bike, and possess lower gear ratios for steeper pathways that have poor traction.

 

For The Athlete: The Racing Bike

The racing bike is the standout star athlete in the group. Sleek, lightweight and lightning fast these beautiful bikes are built for speed. Competitive bike racing is a widely popular sport, athletes look for the best of the best when purchasing their bicycles. Unlike the bells and whistles of the mountain and road bikes, these bikes have minimal accessories, drop handlebars and narrow tires. The handlebar design allows for a riding position that is aerodynamic and the gear range is minimal. This allows the bike to operate at optimum efficiency. Carbon fiber is used in the higher end models of the racing category and makes for a very lightweight model.

 

For The Casual Rider: The Beach Cruiser

The beach cruiser is built for style, and my personal favorite. Unlike their lightweight counterparts, the beach cruiser is built with a heavy frame and designed for comfort over performance. Padded seats and curved back handlebars allow the rider to sit comfortably and ride with ease. The cruiser model was the bike standard throughout America in the 40’s and 50’s. Traditionally, beach cruisers operate on a single speed and have easy brakes. Today you are able to find models with up to seven speeds, and the introduction of the use of aluminum to design them have made them lighter weight than what they once were. Most popularly seen near the beaches, riding along the boardwalks, beach cruisers are available worldwide.

 

 

For The Happy Couple: The Tandem

The tandem bicycle, introduced in 1898, was developed to allow multiple riders to use one bicycle together as transportation. Now used in not only casual biking but racing as well, the tandem bicycle is still popular and relevant today. A popular vacation rental, you can sit two (or more) individuals, one in front of the other, and cruise. In comparison to a traditional one-seat bicycle, the tandem bike has double the pedaling power, as two individuals work together. It does however possess the same wind resistance and weighs less than twice as much as a single weighs. With those factors taken into consideration, a tandem cycle can reach higher speeds faster than a single rider bike making it a good choice for someone who wants to get around quicker, and who loves company.

Summer is peak time for outdoor fitness and activities.  From the sky to the surf and all the land stretched out in between, your options for adventure are endless.  

If you are looking to get your feet wet, and seek an adrenaline rush, parasailing is something to look into this season.  Many resort destinations offer it at the local marina, starting around $65 for a standard 600 ft. flight.  For those new to this exhilarating excursion, you will be taken to a dock to meet your boat and driver, and safely be secured into a harness before being lifted to get a birds-eye view of the land and sea.  You can expect to see amazing views of the islands below,  whether you opt to take off from the waters in the Bahamas, the Florida Keys or Catalina Island in California.  You can opt for a dry flight, or you can request to have your feet dipped in the water for an extra thrill.

For a good leg and core workout, opt for stand up board.  A little easier than jumping into a surf lesson, stand up board, or SUB, allows you to stand and paddle a board through ocean or lake waters.  On a board slightly larger than a surfboard, you will use balance to stay upright and navigate yourself through the water with a single oar.  The beauty of this sport is that you can adjust its difficulty to your level.  Start on your knees, rowing slowly and work your way up to standing and cutting through the water at higher speeds.  Certain cities, like Manhattan and Hoboken, offer stand up board water tours.

For fans of full water immersion, snorkeling and diving are the top choice.  Enjoying the beauty and color of underwater life, your experience can vary greatly from coast to coast.  Recommended are the waters of Hawaii, Australia and the Western Caribbean where you will find the clearest and warmest waters.  You can opt to take a snorkeling tour on an organized excursion or you can pick up your own gear and head to a local lagoon or reef to explore on your own.  Safety is important, so make sure you check out locations ahead of time to make sure that it is safe to swim, and that you don’t disturb reef or wildlife that isn’t meant to mingle with humankind.  You can generally rent gear if you snorkel or dive through a company, however, if you are going to opt to venture out on your own, buying your gear in a bundle will save you money and time searching for each individual piece.  Look for bundles that include a quality silicone mask, a comfortable mouthpiece, durable fins, and a carrying bag.  

For land lovers, summer specific sports allow you to a break from the norm when it comes to fitness and how we spend our outdoor time with friends and family.  Heading to the local beach or park for a game of sand volleyball gives us a great sweat session without feeling like work.  You can also opt to get a team together to play throughout the summer.  Make sure to wear supportive workout gear that will allow you to stretch and jump, and don’t forget a powerful SPF to protect yourself from the suns harsh rays.

Tennis is also a great option for heart-pumping cardio.  It is also another sport that allows you to be social.  You can join a long-term league, play at a local court with friends or sign up for lessons if you are new to the sport and are looking to try something that will challenge you.  Wilson’s Pro Staff 95S and Head’s Graphene Prestige Pro tennis racquets were named two of the top racquets for 2014.  Priced at $199 and $189 respectively, they are on the professional end.  If you are looking for a good racquet to get you started, the Wilson OS500 is a good place to start, priced modestly at just $39.99.

Though not strictly a summer activity, hiking ranks high on the favorites list.  Minimal gear is needed, and you can do it almost anywhere.  Hiking allows you to feel a sense of adventure, whether you are exploring your own city or blazing mountain trails thousands of miles from home.   Make sure you wear a good hiking shoe to protect your ankles and your feet from the elements, like the Adidas Terrex Swift hiking shoe, and bring plenty of water.   It is a good rule of thumb to bring more water than you think you will need in case you are out longer than planned or if it’s warmer than anticipated.  Also, pack a light snack and apply sunscreen and bug spray to exposed skin. 

Remember that summer is a time for adventure, making memories and letting go of stress.  Whatever sports or activities you choose to partake in this summer, make it something you enjoy. Try something new.  Get outside, and more importantly, get outside your comfort zone.

You spend countless hours (maybe even days, weeks…) finding the right bathing suit to fit your body type. Did you know it’s equally as important to find one that complements your skin tone too? Just as a one-size-fits-all bikini only exists in a dream world, (or a Sisterhood of the Traveling pants sequel), a bathing suit in the right color will compliment one person far better than it would another.

If you’re fair:
Porcelain skin on the beach can be classically beautiful when you find the right bathing suit. The goal is to find colors that will make your skin appear warmer, instead of washed out. The favorite hue this season, for the fairest of them all, is bright apple red. Vintage cuts inspired by the 30’s and 40’s are also making waves this year. Designer Norma Kamali makes a 40’s inspired ruched bandeau swimsuit reminicient of Marilyn herself. This bold color works well if you are fair or have pink undertones. Pair this look with a large hat and glasses to further protect your delicate skin while adding an heir of mystery and elegance to your ensemble in true Miss Monroe fashion.

Other colors that work well on fair skin: Lime or apple green and warm browns, such as chestnut.
Colors to avoid: White, black, orange and yellow.

If you have olive skin:
The most versatile of skin tones, olive. Brozed and glowing naturally, olive skin-tones have the greatest selection when it comes to playing with color. Because so many colors will compliment your skin, try playing around with fun summery hues that compliment one another. Our favorites this season:  coral and turquoise. Pair a ruffled coral bikini by River Island with a gorgeous turquoise Cole Haan tote to pack all of your lazy-day beach reads.

Other great color picks: Mint, yellow, baby blue, and chocolate.  
Colors to avoid: Mustard, grey, and hues that are close to your skintone or hair color.

If you’re dark:
Dark skin is accented best with summers gorgeous jewel tones. A bright color such as emerald really pops when accented with muted tan accessories such as a dramatic straw hat or strappy sandals. Metallic accents also work very well. Try pairing the emerald green one-piece from J.Crew with classic logo cuff by Vince Camuto for a classy and trendsetting look while you lounge by the pool with your favorite cocktail in hand.

Other tones that make the cut: amethyst, fushia and yellow.
Colors to avoid: Beige and olive.
 

If you’re medium skin toned:
Caucasian and asian women with beige or yellow undertones, who tend to tan and not burn, wear muted naturals and pretty pastels well.
