juice beauty organic foundation

After finding a mineral mascara I love (Mineral Fusion) and a new mineral blush (Tart), I was on a mission to find a better foundation. I have been mixing a mineral powder foundation by Ulta with a regular Maybelline cream foundation that is loaded with chemicals. I had done research on EWG.org (the environmental working group, they test products for safety and is amazing source of information) to see what the best organic foundation would be that still gave good coverage for nights out or photo shoots. I had found one online that stated it was carried by Ulta and was in a very fair price range of around $28. (some you find will run $65+, especially at Sephora, etc.) So I was excited to go get some. However, it was an online only brand, and since I'm so fair, I have to color match so I don't come out looking orange.

They did however have Juice Beauty. A line of all organic face products, including makeup and skincare. I picked up a bottle of the lightest foundation and sampled it on my skin, it matched perfectly and the smell was very light and lemony. I ended up splurging and bought myself the entire line of skin care, (the green apple face mask peel, the moisturizer, night serum and hydrating mist) because it was half off and I needed a new organic skincare regime anyways! Win, win!

So, as for my review of the makeup. I give it a 6 out of 10. While I love that its gentle on my skin and smells nice, and the color is right, its almost sticky. The pump doesn't squirt correctly (which I had read about it on other reviews) and it doesn't blend as easily as regular foundations. The price point was also a little higher, $38 for the same size bottle of the one I had originally gone in looking for. However, I am willing to sacrifice a little more money and a little more time in application to save my skin. It also pairs beautifully with my mineral powder, when together the coverage is just enough!

I will be reviewing the skincare line soon! I just want to use it a little longer for a true review :)

bamboo

So as I've gone through my make-up supply cleaning it up (bye bye chemicals, hello minerals!) I started to think of other aspects in my vanity and wardrobe. A lot of what we wear isn't good for the environment either (polyester anyone?) and there's been a wonderful trend in bamboo clothing. I use to mainly see it in a lot of yoga studio shops, but now whole foods, farmers market clothing vendors and other up scale clothing designers are carrying these luxuriously soft pieces that are eco-friendly not to mention ADORABLE.

Some information regarding Bamboo:
Cleans the air. Bamboo gives us clean air to breathe, consumes carbon dioxide and, because bamboo forests are so dense, returns 30% more oxygen to the atmosphere than trees. Some bamboo sequester up to 12 tons of carbon dioxide from the air per hectare.

- Requires less energy, water to grow. It takes much less energy to grow and sustain bamboo than other similar trees and plants used for fiber production. Bamboo plantations require very little maintenance. Bamboo also requires very little water and can survive drought conditions as well as flooding.

- Reclaims land. Because of its rapid growth and root structure, bamboo can, in a very short time, reclaim land destroyed by overgrazing and over-building and clean the soil of toxins.

- Can be grown without pesticides.
Bamboo can be grown without pesticides or chemicals because of it's own anti-bacterial agent.

- Can be harvested sustainably. Bamboo is one of the fastest growing plants on the planet, making it a high yield renewable resource. It can be selectively harvested annually and is capable of complete regeneration without need to replant.

- 100% biodegradable.
Unlike synthetic fibers which incorporate petroleum additives, bamboo clothing is safe for municipal disposal programs, whether by landfill or incineration.

Another option when choosing clothing that is earth & body friendly, is organic cotton. It's a top pick when bamboo may be hard to find. Organic cotton is vegan, compostable, biodegradable and good for your skin.

Some apparel lines who use organic cotton include:

Greensource
Anvil
H&M
Nike (Just Do It.)

So.. In my quest of finding healthier, more organic options to put in my body, I thought it would be wrong of me to continue putting all kinds of nasty chemicals on my body.

Today I found myself looking up numerous reviews, and after seeing stars, 5 out of 5 to be exact.. I took myself to The Body Shop and stocked up on the following.

Nutriganics Foaming Facewash, Seaweed Exfoliator, Seaweed Purifying Mask, and the SPF Daily Moisturizer. A nice little haul I would say, and though pricey, it came out to be the same price for ALL that I would spend on ONE facial at a posh spa. I will report on how it’s working..

I used the foaming cleanser and the exfoliator tonight and my face feels like satin.. so far so good.. if you’ve used these, or know of some great organic products of your own.. feel free to comment..

about

Nosh & Nurture was born of this journey I am on to better the health of myself, my family and those around me.  What started as a simple compilation of recipes has grown to a all-around lifestyle journal with ways to incorporate organic products into your home, pantry and beauty cabinet.  I also include stories on pregnancy, new motherhood, travel, Proverbs 31 marriage, and spiritual health, as I am a Christian who couldn't do any of this without my Lord & Savior Jesus Christ. For more of my story you can click here.

All recipes are gluten-free and dairy-free with a lot of soy-free, grain-free, sugar-free options.
