While it's important to detox year round, the holiday season is a crucial time to take care to detox our bodies, mind and souls regularly. The change in weather, family and added financial stressors, additional caloric intake and cold and flu season all threaten our health on a daily basis. Below I share my detox routine that helps keeps me balanced overall. I am not a doctor, as a nutritionist I am sharing what works best for me. While most of these methods are gentle and are able to be used by most, please always consult your doctor before trying any new detox methods.
Next On The Detox Plan:Always looking for ways to aid my body in detoxing, I've asked Santa for a rebounder (translation: adult trampoline) which aids which also gets the lymph system moving. The gym I joined has a dry sauna which is king in ways to detox. I plan to start slow and steady under the care of my doctor and increase my time in the sauna. I also have more tests scheduled on my detox pathways. Always growing, learning, but most importantly praying for healing. You may have noticed detox baths (usually a mix of warm water, Epsom salt and essential oils) are missing from my list. I found each time I did one I got sick. My doctor told me they are probably to intense for me right now (which is why everyone is different) and that a foot soak is probably a better way for me to go right now. Anything missing that you swear by to detox this time of year? Or do you have a favorite from the list? Also, for those of you that have experience rebounding or hitting the sauna, what's been your experience?

I'm excited for what the next chapter holds for Nosh & Nurture. I'm excited to peel back more of the pages that God is writing on my story and fully live in every delicious moment. In 2015 I felt him put the word "Abundance" on my heart and He has blessed us abundantly in so many ways this year. Through new friendships, new careers and new accomplishments, my heart overflows with thankfulness. I now feel "Diligent" pressing upon my heart and mind this season and feel that 2016 will be a season of discipline. Only He knows what that truly means, but I know this path is new and the journey long to continue to grow my business and have faith that He will take it where He wants it to go. It may be that I need to let go of other irons in the fire, ones that I feel I hold on to for security. A security that is false and comes from the world, and not of my Father. I pray that He would grant me wisdom and help me to be diligent in His plan for me, for us. And that I can put aside my fears or my own understanding of what I think is the right answer and dive in, with all of me, into what He's calling me to. Not an easy feat by any means for us mere humans. But with Christ's strength, it's a whole other ballgame. One He's already shown us the final score for. And the great news is, the best news is, that we win. With Him, we always win. Doesn't mean it's an easy game. Doesn't mean we won't skid our knees or take a few balls sliding into home, but it does mean we will get there. And that's a promise worth holding on to. Now that the tassel is displayed in my office, as a reminder that no matter what twists and turns we take, we can find our way back to purpose, I will pray on, and diligently work at, the next step. In helping those who need to get back to health. Who are seeking a better relationship with food. I'm beyond excited to work with others to understand our bodies, our food sources and make a game plan for them, and for their families, in nourishing their bodies, minds and souls in the best way. I would love for you to share your stories below. It fascinates me to hear how people find their purpose. The roads they take, the detours that lead them to somewhere better. Let's chat. And to all of you who support this journey. For everyone who's read this blog, a blog that started with just 5-10 readers (my dad being one of them, my husband, another) that has now grown into the tens of thousands, I thank you. For sharing your stories with me, for inviting me into your lives and your communities. For trying my recipes, for laughing and crying along with me. Thanks for being the encouragement that got me to this milestone in my life. It's because of you that I got to wear a cap and tassel, for the very first time. Throughout my life, one could consider me a "foodie". Though I never had a bad relationship with food in the past, after moving out on my own, I ate semi-healthful diet as a young adult, but I based my food choices on pleasure over purpose. Living in Hollywood, I enjoyed salads, vegan subs and whole wheat pastas and chicken when at home. So I thought I was golden to eat whatever I wanted on my "off time". I loved sipping a sugar-laden latte (before I knew better) and biting into a posh bakery cupcake. I enjoyed late night movies with friends eating local L.A. Chinese takeout & red wine. Rich cream sauces topped my salmon dinners. I had gotten it wrong. Decadence over dedication. To my body, and to God. I firmly believe that we can find purpose in our pain, and developing health ailments was a way to force me to change the way I ate and the way I look at food. I believe it all had a purpose. It wasn't easy, even a little scary, it takes dedication, it takes diligent planning every single day, but its not without purpose. It's what led me here. To this blog. To meeting you. It's what led me back to school. It's what led me to learning more than I ever thought I could about food, our food system, our bodies. It's what led me to helping me family eat better. It's what led me to be able to calmly answer those who are scared when they learn they can no longer drink milk or eat bread. I believe its what led me to conceive a child giving us hope for a family one day. That is all what one calls purpose. And it's all from a wonderful and purposeful God. Through biblical principles we can deduce that it is beneficial and even morally right to emphasize a healthful diet. Above & beyond the outward and earthly reasons that God places us on a path to research nutrition and gain a better understanding, is that it's His food that is made for us and we can bring Him glory through our choices. I wanted to look deeper into where it is sourced biblically and use it to keep myself committed to eating and cooking clean and taking care of my family for His glory. I knew, when I walked away from some of the western doctors who tried to write me prescription after unneeded prescription*, that His food was going to be a path to healing. He put vitamin and nutrient rich foods here FOR us. Herbs FOR us. All made by our glorious God. We know God cares for our well-being and that our bodies need to remain in good health to carry out the work God has planned for us as seen in Exodus 2:10. 10 For we are his workmanship, created in Christ Jesus for good works, which God prepared beforehand, that we should walk in them. Having an unhealthy body makes our work harder to do and puts at risk for injuries and illness. Those with chronic illnesses know the wrong foods, unhealthy foods and sugar can also cause pain, lethargy, depression, anxiety and brain fog, among many, many other problems. All hurdles to motivation and movement. Psalms has so many beautiful verses on God's provision over us, and His animals, with the food He's blessed us with. I've learned through God's word and eating organic to respect the seasons. I no longer eat strawberries when there's a chill in the air because it was God's plan for them to be sweet treats of summer. Same with the cyclical life of grapes and squashes. As we cleanse our bodies of GMO and non-organically grown food we learn to plan our menus around the seasons. And there is something so beautiful about that. Psalm 104:27 These all look to you, to give them their food in due season. I still mess up and as I pray on this, I can feel when God is telling me something isn't right for me or my body. That's its not serving its purpose as something that's healthful or helpful. As a human, I mess up and I make wrong decisions, but I believe as we ask God for strength and conviction on what He believes is best for us, we can give up what's bad and our relationship with Him and our health can grow. Growing in health, in joy and in fulfillment through the delicious, healthy bounty He has put here for us to enjoy. We can still find joy in His gifts. We can still make beautiful dinners for friends at our table. We can still create beautiful dishes that inspire others to eat clean. We just need to remain mindful of the source of which our food comes, how it benefits our health and bodies so that we may remain steadfast in our works for His kingdom's Glory. *I do believe there is always a time and place for prescription medications and they can be a blessing in certain situations. Please always speak to you doctor and naturopath on healthy alternatives and know when your medications are needed. In what ways have you seeked God's guidance on your health journey? Today's #FitnessFriday post is by the awesome Michael Gales at Everlast. I came across his post and have had so many chats with friends, clients and my instructors on the ability to succeed with building muscle and training well while living a vegan lifestyle. Michael explains it so well, so I've asked my awesome team at Everlast Nutrition if I could share some of his expertise and they agreed. A Friendly Reminder: All products purchased through Everlast Nutrition can be bought at a discount with added gifts when using the promo code NOSHEVERLAST upon check out. Historically, plant-based proteins were deemed not as effective for muscle building as their animal counterparts, due to their amino acid profile. For years, soy seemed to be the only alternative to animal-based whey protein. The problem with soy, however, was that it also had the reputation of boosting estrogen levels, so many people were reluctant to touch it. Vegan protein has evolved significantly in recent years, as more and more people look to alternatives for whey and soy. Not only are plant-based proteins as effective as their animal counterparts, but here are 6 other reasons to go green for muscle building: 1. Complete Amino Acid Profile
Believe it or not, there are vegan proteins with complete amino acid profiles, high in both BCAAs and glutamine. In fact, all-natural rice and pea protein blends now rival the traditional sources of whey and egg. The goal of any quality protein supplement is to deliver proper nutrition, in order for its users to increase lean muscle mass and strength. The new vegan blends have high bioavailability, which increases post-workout recovery. The protein is quickly digested and delivered to the muscles to reduce the catabolic effect of training. Not to mention, the new vegan blends are now quite effective at helping with lean muscle mass growth. 2. No Lactose Lactose is not only a problem for lactose intolerant people, but for everyone else as well. Proteins with higher levels of lactose can cause bloating, gas and flatulence. Thankfully, vegan proteins are lactose-free, so they’re easily digested (without causing any stomach issues). Believe me, no one wants to be trapped in an elevator next to the guy who just had 2 scoops of low quality protein. 3. No Ethical Issues Many people prefer to avoid animal-based proteins, foods and other products for ethical, religious or dietary reasons. Luckily, there’s vegan proteins, which are plant based and don’t violate these people’s beliefs or principles. 4. Free of Hormones In recent years, health-conscious people have clamored for a protein that’s just as effective as animal protein, but is free from all the chemicals that are fed to livestock. Chemicals are typically not present in whey protein, but many people don’t want to take any chances. Many gym-goers also avoid soy out of fear that soy protein will affect their estrogen levels. The new vegan protein mixture of rice and peas eliminates those concerns and also rivals the muscle-building effects of whey. 5. Hypoallergenic It’s not just what the new vegan blends have; it’s also what they don’t have that makes them so attractive. They’re not only free of dairy products, but they also have no gluten, simple sugar or cholesterol. The new premium vegan protein blends are also sweetened naturally with stevia, as opposed to aspartame. All of these qualities make the vegan blend a good option for those with allergies or high cholesterol. 6. Better Tasting A big factor for any protein supplement is taste. You can have the most effective protein mix in the world, but if it makes you gag, there’s no way you’ll keep drinking it. Yeah, I’m talking about you, vegetarian protein sources. For years, the taste and consistency were, to put it politely, lacking. The new premium vegan blends are much better, with a smooth consistency and pleasant taste. In fact, in a blind taste test, you’d be hard pressed to pick out the vegan drink.

What special items makes your gym sessions feel luxurious and keep you refreshed? This is a sponsored post. I received free product from Evian in exchange for writing this review. Although this post is sponsored, all opinions, as well as the photography, are my own. Something I've learned in the nutrition world - as well as in the gluten-free community, Paleo community, Whole 30 community, and so forth, is you either smoothie or you don't. Some people are totally against it, others find it intimidating (you don't have to, get my easy recipes here!), others argue about the way the sugars of liquid-form fruits work in your body (and as a nutritionist, I understand these points too, which is why I always add veggies to mine for balance) and others find them to be a luxury. Especially when you add in protein powders. Protein powders can be quite pricey, especially the good quality brands with high health benefit profiles, and so in turn many associate protein = luxury item. But to me, it's a non-negotiable and it comes down to my priorities. If I'm blessed enough to have the means to stay on mine regularly, I choose to make it a priority, every morning. I feel better, I feel healthier and I perform better when my body is getting all of the nutrients, vitamins and amino acids it needs. And whether you're on the Standard American Diet, an elimination diet or special diet, its easy to miss out on essential nutrients your body needs. I start every day with one of three smoothies. On weekends, when I cook a gourmet breakfast, I have my smoothie for lunch. I like to put them in rotation so that my body is regularly getting high doses of not only the things I'm deficient in, but things that my Dr. has prescribed for me, things that help my body to heal, to be energized and things that keep my immune system boosted.

Nosh and Nurture believes in authenticity and only in products that nurture well-being and health. You ever have days where you set your intentions to work out, you head into your gym or home gym and then you space on your routine or lose motivation, ending up being less productive than planned? For those of you saying no, well that's awesome for you, haha, you probably have an organized workout regiment that you stick with. But those of you like me, who outside of tried and true favorites, don't have a structured plan of action each time your Nike's hit the gym floor - this post is for you. Mr. Charming and I put together this master list of ab exercises and it's framed on our gym wall. A few times a week we set our intentions on a number, 200, 300 etc. and then pull from the list the exercises we want to knock out in sets of 20. It gives us the opportunity to mix it up daily and allows us to get right into our workouts without much planning. Below you will find our bank of 20 abdominal exercises that you can mix and match to make your optimal workout of the day. When added with cardio and yoga or Pilates, your abs will get an awesome workout each week!
If you have any questions on the above exercises, leave it in the comments! Most of them are pretty straight forward, and if you are used to working out shouldn't be anything new. It's just convenient to have a handy-dandy list in place so you can pick and choose and knock them out without much planning.

Just as important as a good sweat session, meditation helps to relax us, clear our minds and steady us for what the day, week or moment will bring.
There's a specific CD that I use that I love, It's a meditation CD that my CB Therapist gave me that is all led by God's word. Meditating to scripture helps connect me to what's important and let's me rest and relax for twenty minutes at the beginning or end of my day. For a quick recharge, try this calming 2 minute video below by my friend Rachel Zeskind. While paradise is probably at the top of all of our lists for the perfect place to relax and recharge, all you need is a quiet space to sit or lay, where you can be cool, calm and comfortable. Even an office breakroom, airplane seat or heck, a bathroom if you're a busy mom looking to grab two minutes of calm, will work for this short, but effective, video. Share on social media with the hashtag #FitnessFriday to connect and share with others.
Through my position at Runway, I've had the privilege to work with the beautiful Holistic Health & Wellness Coach Rachel Zeskind. She is one of our fabulous writers and always has something to share regarding clean living, eating well, managing stress and an abundance of fitness tips.
From time to time we are going to be sharing one of her wonderful recipes, videos or articles to help inspire a healthy and fitness driven attitude for this summer. I've personally had a very stressful week - and needed something to help me recenter, get focused and be calm while helping to relax my muscles. Aside from my prayer time in the mornings, I like to unwind with gentle stretching, breathing techniques and Rachel's stress-reduction yoga video. The video takes just over 90 seconds and is a great way to end the day or break up a busy day. For more - visit www.RachelZeskind.com |
